Scholarship Opportunities
Our most popular scholarship program is the FLAG (Future Leaders of American Government) Scholarship program, offering $1 million in travel assistance to thousands of families each year. Families with an annual adjusted gross income (AGI) up to $85,000 are invited to complete a confidential, easy application to receive travel assistance funds. The scholarship program is supported by a grant from the FLAG Foundation, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, and supplemented by funds from WorldStrides. Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Find out more at FlagFound.org.
Helping Hands Scholarship
Helping Hands is a fund sponsored by Nubian Village Academy affilliates that awards program scholarships to deserving students who may otherwise not have the opportunity to participate in The Global Village program. Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program
Nike's Jordan Fundamentals Grant Program awards $1 million annually to teachers in travel grants for minority students. Applicants must be middle school or high school teachers in schools where more than half of the students receive free school lunches.
Applicants propose a fieldtrip, which must meet a specific student need and innovate a solution to the problem. For example, high school juniors and seniors may visit a small business development center, a college or university or a natural resources office to learn about the ecosystem and endangered animals. The grants pay for transportation.

Fundraisers
Many students work individually and with the help of their communities in order to raise money for their NVA-Global Village Youth Travel program. Sending a child on a trip of a lifetime is an opportunity families, friends, and neighbors can rally behind. The most successful individual fundraising effort NVA-Global Village students use are Gift of Education letters, but there is no limit to the creative ways you and your child can work together to contribute to their travels.
Fundraising Ideas and Information
Steps to Fundraising
Offer to do tasks for friends and family
Car Wash - This classic fundraiser is always popular - and successful! In addition to washing people's cars, you can sell baked goods and sodas to people waiting for their car to be washed. You could even incorporate a raffle. Be creative, the sky's the limit!
School Night - Talk to the manager of local restaurants, bowling alleys, ice cream shops, etc., and ask them if they'll designate their slowest night of the week as your school's night. On that evening, a portion of the proceeds of each order go to your trip fund!
Penny Drive - Each class or each grade can compete against one another in this fundraiser. Place gallon jars in each room, with a sign explaining the purpose of your fundraiser. Pennies each equal one positive point. Silver colored coins and bills all count as negative points. Thus, students are encouraged to put pennies in their own class jar and other coins into other class' jars. The team with the most points at the end of the contest gets to watch a movie at school...or whatever prize motivates your classmates.
Yard Sale - Invite all parents in your grade to bring their unwanted items to a common location one Saturday morning for a group yard sale. Promote your yard sale via flyers around your school and PA announcements. You'll find that many people will be eager to get rid of their clutter and will be happy to give the proceeds from the sale go into your class' trip fund!
Bake Sale - This is a sweet way to raise money for your trip. Get together with some friends and make a few batches of cookies or brownies to sell at school during your lunch period. You might even be able to get permission from a local business to sell in front of their store.
Talent Show - Charge admission to a school or neighborhood talent show. Students in your class can put on entertaining acts of singing, dancing, magic, and much more! Everyone will have a great time, and the proceeds can go to your trip fund.
Pajama Day - Get permission from your school or teacher to have a pajama day at school. Students can pay for the privilege to wear comfy sweats or pajamas on a designated day. Everyone will be glad for the opportunity to wear comfortable clothes to school!
Craft Fair - Get together with other creative and motivated students, and create homemade jewelry, ornaments, keychains, etc. Sell these items at school or in your neighborhood.
Fundraising Ideas and Information
Steps to Fundraising
- Set objectives - Professional fundraisers recommend setting a specific objective ahead of time so that everyone is working toward a goal. The group can work toward a goal together or students can set their own individual goals. It is easier to set goals in terms of a percentage of the cost of the trip: 25%, 50%, or 100%.
- Determine the time commitment - There are two approaches to fundraising based on the amount of time you are able to commit: working with an outside company or doing it on your own. If your time commitment is limited, you may prefer pre-packaged fundraising options. However, you may find that a group of teachers and parents have the time and desire to coordinate the fundraising on their own.
- Helps raise a portion of the trip cost.
- Gives students a sense of ownership in making the program a reality.
- Creates camaraderie among students, chaperones, and the community.
Offer to do tasks for friends and family
- Do chores around the house
- Depending on the season, you can rake leaves, shovel snow, or mow the lawn of your parents or neighbors' houses
- While a neighbor is away on vacation, take care of their plants and pets and collect their mail every day.
- Tutor younger students
- Wrap presents for family and friends during the holiday season
- After cleaning your room, hold a mini yard sale to make some extra money off of the things you no longer need
- Babysitting
- Working for your parents
- Delivering newspapers
- Lifeguarding
- Working for an after-school program or camp
